Social Housing Arenawijk

The redevelopment of the Arenawijk by TM Areal – Gestalt – Tom Thys Architecten offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the modernist legacy of Renaat Braem and Wouters within the twentieth-century belt of Deurne. Designed for Woonhaven Antwerpen, the project comprises around 289 social dwellings and redefines the urban fabric as a layered symbiosis of architecture, landscape, and community. The former residential slabs are replaced by a diverse ensemble of row houses, park blocks, and towers, carefully interwoven with neighbourhood squares and collective parks. In this renewed composition, light, air, and space are once again elevated as social values. The brick architecture, in two shades of red, bridges the small and the large, the individual and the collective. The result is a readable and livable district, where social cohesion and sustainability take form through an economic yet poetic architecture, reimagining the modernist ideal of connected living for the twenty-first century.
