Recreation site 'T Gezel
Municipality of Asse | Zellik
The ’t Gezel leisure campus project in Zellik (Asse) involves the creation of a new neighbourhood park and the construction of a multifunctional leisure centre, embedded in a sustainable masterplan that weaves together public functions, ecology, and community. The robust building, positioned between the Brussels ring road and the park, houses a library, cultural spaces, youth facilities, multipurpose halls, and a youth centre. At its core lies a double-height Agora, flooded with zenithal light, which acts as a dynamic circulation and meeting space that stimulates interaction. The municipal garden is transformed into a three-hectare green park with space for play, sport, and nature, while a car-free Noorderlaan connects the cultural square to the village centre. The rational system-based structure, with a shell-as-finish approach and sustainable technologies, allows the programme to evolve over time. ’t Gezel is not conceived as an object but as an instrument for community building: a socio-cultural engine anchored in Zellik’s collective memory, where park and architecture together create a new communal heart for a diverse population.
