Housing Development Komet Phase 01
Commissioned by Re-Vive nv, we are designing two buildings as part of the first phase of the masterplan by Binst Architects and Brut Architecture & Urbanism for the redevelopment of the KOMET site in Mechelen — a brownfield transformation of the former COMET beer barrel factory, located between the canal and the city ring. The project aims to establish a new standard for urban living, embedded in a generous park landscape that forms the foundation of the site’s renewal. The first building anchors itself along the park edge with a refined plinth, slightly elevated ground-floor apartments, and an upper structure articulated with bays and recessed terraces, creating a layered volumetry and a subtle interplay between shelter and openness. The second building faces the canal, with a ground-floor brasserie activating the public realm and rational yet generous layouts offering wide views and well-oriented outdoor spaces. The material palette subtly echoes the site’s industrial past, while the architectural expression focuses on sustainability, clarity, and refined detailing — creating a mutually reinforcing dialogue between architecture and public space as a model for contemporary urban living.
