Atheneum KA Hoboken

GO! | Hoboken

The extension of the Atheneum Hoboken by Areal Architecten, a competition entry awarded second place, concludes a long-term masterplan in which architecture and pedagogy intertwine with deliberate precision. Through minimal interventions and maximal reuse, the 1954 main building is reinterpreted as a communicating vessel between the secondary school and the adjacent primary school, De Schakel. A new entrance pavilion along the Hendriklei introduces a delicate framework of canopies and galleries, transforming circulation into an open, social experience rather than a closed corridor. Around a preserved oak tree, a green courtyard unfolds, fusing building and landscape in a poised equilibrium. With structural clarity and spatial generosity, the project embodies a pedagogy of transparency and collectivity — a restrained yet expressive architecture that translates continuity, growth, and community into form. The result is both a rational intervention and a poetic consolidation of the modern school as an urban landscape.
