Student Housing PJ-Vanbenedenstraat

At the corner of PJ Vanbenedenstraat and Bondgenotenlaan in Leuven, Areal Architecten, commissioned by Kwalis, unfolds a refined urban experiment that explores a morphological articulation attuned to the intricate fabric of the city. Within a serrated volume, 44 student rooms and a commercial ground floor are composed as a rhythmic ensemble, translating the scale of the individual unit into a vivid urban expression. Cascading cornices, subtle recesses, and gentle folds negotiate the building’s presence within its context, tempering density with nuance. More than a mere typological exercise in student housing, the project establishes a spatial dialogue between individuality and collectivity—through shared circulation, communal outdoor spaces, and tactile detailing. It stands as an architectural condensation of urbanity, a discreet yet eloquent gesture within the historic continuum of Leuven, where precision and poetry coalesce into a contemporary form of inhabitation.
