Areal Office in the Officers’ Mess Groen Kwartier

Areal Architecten | Berchem

The Officers’ Mess of the former Military Hospital in Antwerp offered Areal Architecten the opportunity to root their practice within a context of heritage and transformation. Situated in the Groen Kwartier – where urban living and greenery intertwine with the reconversion of the hospital complex – the project was realised on a modest budget, focusing on light, proportion, and spatial continuity. The greatest gift of the existing structure lies in its generous ceiling heights and communal spaces, which lend the architecture a natural sense of openness and generosity. As much of the original fabric as possible was retained; nothing was added. Only a few strategic openings were made, connecting rooms into a fluid, continuous sequence of spaces that remain both linked and distinct. The Officers’ Mess embodies the measured and contextual attitude of Areal Architecten: an architecture that does not seek to impress, but to liberate spacemodest, precise, and timeless, grounded in the genius loci of the Groen Kwartier.
