Primary School Deuzeldpark

GO! | Schoten

The extension of Deuzeldpark Primary School, the result of a won restricted competition, combines the replacement of the kindergarten building with the school’s transition to a two-class structure. Within the limited capacity funding, the design also accommodates a covered playground, multipurpose hall, and festive space. The heated volume is deliberately confined to educational and administrative zones, while the traditional corridor is replaced by a generous greenhouse-like intermediate space — serving as a covered playground in winter and summer, and as an extension of the classroom during the in-between seasons. The orthogonal placement reveals a double-bay structure and creates vistas through the school grounds. Classrooms open onto garden patios adjoining the park as well as onto the central greenhouse, separated by a hybrid furniture wall integrating storage, seating, washbasins, and ventilation plenums. A rational structural system, lightweight materials, and repetitive detailing enabled a construction time of just nine months, while wood and glass impart a warm and serene tactility to the whole.
