Conversion into an Open Learning Environment A-Maze

With this project, the GO! Onderwijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap takes on a pioneering role in rethinking the contemporary learning environment. The reconversion of a traditional school building — a single-bay structure with classrooms along a corridor — serves as an opportunity to break open the conventional educational model. The new school for 180 students transforms the existing volume into an open and flexible learning landscape, where learning unfolds as both an individual and collective experience. A central, polyvalent space with a freestanding tribune forms the beating heart of the building, connecting the floors into one coherent whole. Around this core, a variety of zones emerge — dining areas, meeting spots, and quiet study spaces — supporting diverse modes of learning. The project is circular on multiple levels: through the reuse of the existing structure, adaptable spatial organization, and sustainable materiality. The result is a permeable learning environment that spatially anchors the pedagogical and ecological ambitions of Community Education.
